I'm giving the answer to this question from a holistic perspective. Hope that helps.
1. JK is at the northern most part of India, which implies that our northern front is unguarded if we don't have JK in our control
2. JK is the only way we can connect physically with Afghanistan
3. For centuries, we had ignored our N.W. frontiers (which led to invasions from Persia, Panipat wars, etc.). The same can't be done with JK
4. JK is the source of important perennial rivers, and the one who controls them controls the policies
5. If we don't have JK in our control, then infiltrants/militants can stay very safe and very close to our national capital. Imagine, just a few kilometres from Delhi there is a training camp which teaches militants to storm the Indian Parliament
6. Post-independence, realizing these factors JK king wanted to remain independent. that is possible only when he gets support from India and Pakistan, or when he is stronger than both. Neither happened (Pakistan sent fighters inside JK)
May have written too simplitiscally, but yes, that's the crux.
