String theory, in particle physics, that attempts to merge quantum mechanics with the Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.
The theory envisions that a string undergoing a particle mode of vibration corresponds to a particle with definite properties such as the mass and charge. In 1980s the physicists realized that the string theory had the potential to incorporate all four of nature's forces:-
1. Gravity
2. Electromagnetism
3. Weak force 
4. Strong force
and all these types of matter are in a single quantum mechanical framework, suggesting that it would be a long-sought unified field theory.
While string theory is still a vibrant area of research that is undergoing the rapid mode of development, as it remains the purely mathematical construct because it has yet to make contact with the experimental operations.
