the structure called phospholipid bilayer makes it selectively permeable

BrainlyPromoter: plz tell more about that
krishna70: The structure of the phospholipid bilayer prevents random things from drifting through the membrane, and proteins act like doors, letting the right stuff in and out.
krishna70: hope its useful

Plasma membrane is a bi-lipid layer, consisting of sea of lipids and a few proteins molecules floating over.[see pic]

What is selectively permeable?why is plasma membrane called selectively permeable?
Plasma membrane is called as a selectively permeable membrane, because it allows only certain molecule to pass through the cell membrane. like oxygen, carbon dioxide, minerals some proteins etc

It is highly selective in deciding which molecules are to be allowed to pass through the membrane .

Why does it acts as selectively permeable?
It acts as selectively permeable because, The protein molecule in the bi-lipid layer, uses ATP to transport the molecule, and proteins are highly selective in transporting substances. Protien molecule forms a canal for transport of material.
