The ovules after fertilisation, develop into seeds. A seed is made up of a seed coat and an embryo.
Seed coats can be thin and soft as in beans or thick and hard as in locust or coconut seeds.
Endosperm, a temporary food supply, is packed around the embryo in the form of special leaves called cotyledons.
In endospermic seeds, there are two distinct regions inside the seed coat, an upper and larger endosperm and a lower smaller embryo.
The embryo has one cotyledon or seed leaf in monocotyledons, two cotyledons in almost all dicotyledons and two or more in gymnosperms.
