Similarly in HCL, H is a cation and Cl has oxidation no. -1, as HCl is a compound, its total oxidation state will be zero. Let us take ox no. of H in HCl as y, y+(-1)=0, ~y=1. So, sum of ox no. = x+y =1+(-1)=0
