A Narrative ballad

The poem, a narrative balad, tells the story of a woman who was turned into a Woodpecker because of her greed and selfishness. it is a story cast in a cold region of Northland where the days are very short but the nights are very long. It is the land where Swift reindeers pull the slesges during snowfall and the Children look like bear-cubs when covered with flakes of Snow. The Poet narrates the story to bring some important lesson for the readers.

Once Upon a time,the nobel-hearted Saint Peter reached the house of a lady when he felt hungry during one of his wandering for Preaching. He asked for a Small cake. But the lady was miser that she could not give away even a Small one. So She prepared the smallest one,as small and thin as a wafer,to give it to the Saint.The saint got angry with herm He could not bear with the miserliness and selfishness of the lady l. He cursed her to become a Woodpecker so that forever she should have to Peck her food from the wood. At once she was turned into a Woodpecker with a scarlet Cap on head while her clothes were burned black.

Rising above selfishness

Now everyone in the Countryside can see her as a Woodpecker pecking her food from the wood. The idea is that one should rise above selfishness and greediness in order to practise Charity.
