The Poet and the Pauper’ is a play by Bengali Noble Laureate scholar, poet, musician and artist, Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941).

The play is about a rich poet – Kunj Bihari and an impoverished man named Bashambad.

Bashambad goes to Kunj Bihari seeking a job. Kunj Bihari is more interested in reciting a poem for Bashambad, which keeps getting interrupted because of Bashambad’s constant sneezing. He has a bad cold and nothing even to cover himself, in the cold night. Besides, he is very hungry.

Kunj Bihari gets angry because of the frequent interruptions and it is also time for his dinner. He orders Bashambad out of his house. Bashambad tries to remind him that he came to ask for a job, but does not get the chance to do so. Kunj Bihari in a bad temper, goes to have his dinner, while the hungry and cold Bashambad goes outside.

It shows the difference between the ‘have’ and the ‘have-nots’ whose priorities are far different.
