----------------------------- Summary of Chapter 6 : The Canterville Ghost -----------------------------

It was a tea time, Virginia did not come down, Mrs Otis thought she might be in the garden to get the flowers. The fact that she was still not found at dinner time scared the Otis family. They looked for her everywhere, including all the servants at the mansion but Virginia was nowhere to be found. She was searched for in gypsy camp also but to no avail. Virginia's brother searched her in the district. Mr Otis rode off to Ascot, looking for his daughter. The Duke followed him and they went together to the railway station. Mr Otis also visited Bexley village but could not find Virginia. The search, again proved to be futile. They returned home at eleven thirty, empty -handed. Mr Otis ordered everybody to go bed saying that nothing could be done that night and promised that he would telegraph in the morning to Scotland yard to send some detectives.

Just as the family was about to go to bed, there was a dreadful peal of thunder that shook the house. A panel at the top of the staircase flew back with a loud noise.
Looking very pale and white, with a little decorated box in her hand, there appeared Virginia. In a moment they all rushed hoti her. Mr Otis was little angry with her, thinking that she had been playing some foolish trick on them.

Virginia told her father very quietly that she had been with the ghost and he was dead now. He had been very wicked, but was really sorry for all that he had done. He gave her a box of jewels before he died. The whole family gazed at her in mute amazement. She led them through a narrow secret door to a little room.

There they saw the skeleton of Sir Simon, the Canterville Ghost. Virginia knelt down besides the skeleton and prayed silently and wept for him. The family looked on in wonder at the terrible tragedy whose secret was now out. One of the twins looked outside and exclaimed that the withered almond tree had blossomed. Virginia rose to her feet and said that God had forgiven him. A beautiful light illuminated her face.
