Basically this story is about a boy named  Swaminathan who was a careless and carefree character who was yearning for the school to break up for vacation so that he could roam about with his friends from dawn to dusk. His friends were like him but they were much more serious about their studies when compared to Swaminathan, especially Sankar. Since the last paper was Tamil, Swaminathan was already distracted contemplating all the things he could do once the exam was over. He was waiting to listen to various tales by his granny. He  was not prepared for his paper as he did not know or was doubtful about the answers in the paper.  The only answer he was sure about was ill framed and finished in one line which was not adequate  according to his friends and classmate. He realized that he had left the exam hall in a haste instead of  trying to finish his paper as best as he could. All this made him remorseful of the way he treated his  Tamil paper. Though this regret was short lived, it surely  affected him.
