The poem is addressed to an alcoholic person.The alcoholic wake's up in the morning and finds that his body has begun to experience withdrawal symptoms as his hands tremble when holding a cup.The alcoholic feels strange as he is not able to walk and the 'Beached whale' represents his inertia and inefficiency. He feels his legs unsteady,his eyes dim and blurry.He stumble to the cupboard for a drink.He smokes opium which creates serious health issues.The addictive nature of an alcoholic is drawn through this poem.
