Summary of the poem rain by anjum Hasan:

Anjum Hasan is an Indian writer who wrote many short poems. She describes beautiful scene of falling rain that creates a symphony which is like sweet music. The fresh and charming atmosphere mesmerises anyone whoever sees that. The leaves absorb the rain water and pass on to the lower level leaves and then to the thirst quenching roots.

This symbolizes that rich people are the upper leaves, who always try to grow much richer.

The lower leaves are the poor people who are always at the receiving end cannot move upwards. Progress cannot happen without proper opportunities for both levels. The poet hopes sun will shine in the lives of the poor once the rain subsides.

So here’s my summary, hope this helps :)

Don’t be lazy, It may be long but I promise you it will be very helpful...

So in the poem Rain, the poet Anjum Hasan is telling us about the sound of the the rain in the first stanza if you may see.

The poem is set in the northern part of India where it rains more often and has monsoon seasons a lot. Monsoon is a season that is very unique to the subcontinent and people all over the place wait eagerly for the rains after the long hot summer months which occurs right before the monsoon seasons(in India-however not in where I live )

The poet draws vivid and clear images of the typical hot summer days in the minds of the reader.

It seems that even

the trees and birds wait for the rainy season. In the line ”the alphablets of the words" it describes the birds trying to incline or tell us something and longing for rain to finally fall.

She(the poet)moves on to comparing these hot summer months with nights in the mountains where ones fate is linked to umbrellas(it basically means that rain is more common the mountains umbrella is the only thing you depend on then)

because when it(the rain)begins,She describes the impatience with which everyone waits for the clouds to cover the bright blue skies.(like the farmers because of their crops for example)

The poet also expresses nostalgia for the life that she has spent in her hometown. It seems that the poet remembers the streets not by their names but through the familiar sounds and patterns and smells she had experienced while growing up in her childhood days.

So in short she-the poet uses a reflective tone while describing the days she has spent in her hometown which is a beautiful place called Shillong in Meghalaya.

Thank you and have a great Day!
