Summary of The Gifts of Feodor Himkoff
The story is about a couple who lost their only son in a war. They believed that their son was killed by the Russians whom they called Rooshans. So, they wanted to avenge their son's death. The old man 'Isaac' took pledge for revenge and prayed god to send any Russian( at least one) for their avenge.
One day, a Russian ship of 16 people went by. They all stuck in the the storm with no source of help. One of them named Dimitri came to their house with quest for help to which Isaac asked to which country they belong to. He replied Russia, telling him in brief about his condition and asking for help but the question was ignored rather Isaac kidded him out of the house with a burning log of wood and hence all of the 16 members of the ship died. This act was even neither satisfactory for Isaac nor his wife so they preferred not to talk.
The next day Isaac went off the shore and serially collected the died bodies and buried them in his yard.
After 5 years, a sailor came to the house named Feodor Himkoff. He told them that the ship belonged to them and asked him to show where he had buried them and his brother. He also told about his brother's significance that the middle finger of his right hand was missing and it was due to a childhood incident. He thanked them for giving the dead people especially his brother a proper burial without even knowing that they were the ones who were in a way responsible for his brother's death. Since then he had been sending the packages of delicious food to them which neither the old lady nor the man tasted but they kept it for other sailors or travellers who might visit them unexpectedly in any stromy weather. Since they thought it as the only way in which they could repent for their sin.
