- Narrator - A young boy who is 15 years old. He thinks that he is an experienced thief. He does not have a fixed name but tells his name as 'Hair Singh' and he used to hide his identity.
- Meeting Anil - He meets Anil while watching a wrestling match. He shares about his life with Anil. He flatters him to get a job. He said Anil that he can cook meals. But he cooks the meal badly. Anil said to him to leave but he said Anil that he wants to learn and Anil melted and promised him to teach him how to cook and write.
- The Narrator's dishonesty - He used to make tea for Anil in every morning. He goes to the market to buy materials. But he used to keep back a rupee for himself. Anil knew he was not honest but he didn't mind it.
- Anil's Work - Anil used to get money from his articles. He didn't have a regular income. He trusted The narrator and gave him the key to open or close the room.
- Narrator's plan to robbery - One dan Anil comes with a small bundle of currency notes. He puts the money under his pillow. The narrator noticed it. The Narrator gets tempted justifies himself for the robbery. He felt that it won't be easy to rob a careless person as he would have no reaction. He will be out of his job. Moreover, if he does not rob Anil them the money would be spent on friends of Anil. He took the money when Anil was asleep. He went out of the room without making any noise and ran towards the railway station. He counted the money. It was 600 in the fifties.
- The narrator's feelings - He slowed down and didn't go inside the train. He was confused. He takes shelter near the clock tower and starts drizzling. He feels guilty, comes back, and slips the damp bank-notes under Anil's pillow.
- Anil's Kindness - The next morning, Anil gives him fifty rupee notes as his pay. Anil knew his theft but said nothing to him. Anil said that they would start writing sentences from that day. This kindness made him smile and thankful to his master Anil. The narrator changed now.
