When Miss Hilton, a neighbour of the narrator died, a board for sell hung around in front of the house. Nobody saw Miss Hilton when she was alive anyway because she never used to come out or nobody used to go in.
Then a new resident came in to live there. They were a couple; the woman looked sophisticated and refined while the man was pretty ugly, thin, and always drunk. The narrator and his friends were always curious about their life. Suddenly, the man whose name was Toni started beating his wife brutally enough to drive ehr out of the house begging for help.
The narrator's mother opened their door to welcome the distressed Mrs. Hereira and they got to know her unlimited love and trust for her despicable husband. Nobody liked drunk Toni and he never got along with anyone. His drunken habits crossed limits and finally Mrs. Hereira decided to leave him and went to her ex-husband.
Upon knowing his wife's departure, Toni got sadder and madder and began drinking so heavily that he forgot to take care of his vicious dog. The dog, too, at last, gave up on him and escaped its ruthless and lost master.
Once again, a new tenant bought the house. Toni would pop up now and then to ask them for help and the rent for his wife's radio.They were terrified of him.
The narrator saw Toni again after some years driving a lorry with his thin hands whereas Mrs. Christiani appeared to have living her lavish life to the full, happily married to her ex-husband.
