Answer:

Explanation:

First, there are all sorts of things making up the crust, but in general terms, the crust is composed of the silicates, which are a wide variety of minerals with silicon and oxygen.

This is the lightweight fluffy stuff of earth, you could say we live on the pond scum of the earth. It’s the stuff that is less dense than most of what is in the interior of the planet.

But, there are two major distinctions. The continental crust is granitic, which is mostly quartz, feldspars of all types, and and light weight metals, like aluminum.

The oceanic crust has heavier materials, more iron and magnesium, but still silicates, and is generally basaltic. But, we must keep in mind, also, that there are plenty of other things available in the crust also.

Plus, as weathering happens, some of the components of the crustal materials get rearranged, and we get other sedimentary minerals, like halite and gypsum, which are not silicates, but are still found at the surface.

Limestone is also very prevalent, and these are also generally produced at the surface by both organic and inorganic processes.
