the English took the advantage of rivalry of Indian rulers and came with a treaty which came to be known as subsidiary alliance, in this the English would protect the allied the kingdom and the kingdom was not supposed to sign any other treaty.
 advantages
1. the English maintained large army at the expenses of Indian rulers
2. they indirectly controlled the defense and foreign affairs of the allied kingdom
3. they could overthrow the king and annexed the territories at will.
4. the resident interfered with the internal matter of the kingdom of British interests
