We have to find the temperature in Kelvin of a sample of Neon with an RMS speed of 500 m/s.

  • Atomic mass of Ne , M = 20 g/mol = 20 × 10¯³ kg/mol
  • Root mean square (RMS) speed of Neon atom , v = 500 m/s
  • universal gas constant, R = 8.314 J/mol/K

let the temperature of the sample of Neon is T.

RMS speed of an ideal gas is given by, v=\sqrt{\frac{3RT}{M}}

v^2=\frac{3RT}{M}

⇒ 500² = (3 × 8.314 × T)/(20 × 10¯³)

⇒25 × 10⁴ × 20 × 10¯³ = 24.942 × T

⇒T = (25 × 200)/(24.942) ≈ 200 K

Therefore the temperature of the sample of Neon gas in Kelvin is 200K.
