The Gram Panchayat members have tenure of five years. They are directly elected from wards while members elect the sarpanch.  Reservation of seats for women and for scheduled casts and scheduled tribes is also done.

The Gram Panchayat is a political body in the village that comprises all adult member, the member of this cabinet are elected by the adult inhabitants of the village. The Gram Panchayat the first regular democratic body at the village level.  The chairperson of this cabinet is called the Sarpanch. Along with the Sarpanch, the other members of the panchayats have tenure of five years.
