3) It helps in the transpiration process. The process in which plants lose their water in the form of water vapours is termed as transpiration.

Function of leaves in plant :-

Leaves carries out mainly three function :-

1. Photosynthesis - It is synthesis of organic food from inorganic raw materials with the help of light energy inside chlorophyll containing cells.

There are two sub parts of photosynthesis :-

(i) Photolysis - Photolysis of water is photocatalytic splitting of water into its compounds, hydrogen and oxygen.

      2H₂O ⟶ 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ + O₂

(ii) Photo - phosphorylation - It is synthesis of energy rich molecules of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate with the help of light energy.

2. Respiration - It is an enzyme controlled biochemical of step wise oxidative breakdown of organic compounds releasing energy at various steps.

3. Translocation - It is the movement  of materials in solution within an organism especially phloem of plants.

3. Transpiration - It is the loss of water in vapour form from exposed parts of the plants.
