The Dear Departed is a hilarious comedy written on the theme of the erosion of moral values from life . People ,especially of middle class families , have become so selfish, money minded and materialistic that emotional attachment have no meaning for them . The death of a near and dear one is not viewed as a emotional setback but as an event likely to benefit financially. The two daughters, Mrs slater and Mrs Jordan , are so eager to divide the small bits of the grandfather 's property after his death that they do not wait even for his funeral . No wonder , they are jolted out of their dreams when the old man appears on the scene.
