O'Neill, therefore was to address a theme that is universal- man's deepest urge for camaraderie and survival being one of the most instinctual paraphernalia of human nature.Throughout the play, the characters of the Gentleman and Dancer acknowledge, but refuse to let themselves believe, that their situation is hopeless. This unrealistic desire for a will to live becomes even more outrageous as the pair descend into madness.
