what is the theme of the poem of mothers among other things
Answers
Answer:
Mothers, Among Other Things" suggests that we consider our mothers as ordinary as the other things in life. But when the poet sees his old and frail mother bend down to pick up a grain of rice despite her injured finger, he is overcome by guilt and sorrow.
In this poem the poet A.K.Ramanujan tries to depict his mother’s portrait from her youthfulness to her current state.
At present she is looking like an old tree whose bark has become withered and dry. During her youth she was full of vitality and beauty. She used to wear diamond ear-rings that would reflect rays of light. She could be seen going about the house, doing chores, even in the rainy season.
With the passage of time she has become physically weak; her hands look like the talons of an eagle. One of her hands got injured with a mouse trap; as a result she had lost a finger of her hand. Her saris hang loose about her.
The poet is shocked at his mother’s transformation from a healthy lady to her emaciated state.
