In the sonnet “Not Marble, nor the Gilded Monuments”, Shakespeare portrays the importance of immortality of poetry.

He states that wars are for evil and it destructs the establishments created in the memories of loved ones.

The physical destruction is inevitable during wars, whereas the poetry of worthy words which reveal the memories of loved ones last for a long period of time. They become immortal against the physical constructions of gilded monuments.
