It is the property of the material which allows material to pass heat through it. If thermal conductivity is more means that material can pass heat through it very quickly. Actually in our school stages also we come across through it. In reality it plays a crucial role in conduction heat transfer but in our school stages we dealt with conduction mode of heat transfer with out knowing what it is.

Generally conduction heat transfer occurs due to free electrons or due to lattice vibrations. That means all conductors are of having good number of free electrons in it. In practice all conductors of electricity are also good conductors for heat.

Insulators are the substances which will resist the passage of heat through it, these will have lesser thermal conductivity values. In our daily practice some times we have to reduce the heat transfer and some times it should be increased. In the diagram you can see that thermal conductivity value is more, heat transfer is also more i.e. temperature drop will be less.

Because conduction heat transfer is inversly proportional to temperature drop.

Q= -K * A* (dt/dx)

here k is thermal conductivity.

mostly metals will follow this mode of heat transfer because they will have more number of free electrons in it.
