According to the therom of Pythagoras 
(AC)² = (AB)² + (BC)²

Pythagorastheorem, is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle.

Pythagoras Theorem is a theorem which is applied only in Right angled ∆'s..... For eg.---> ∆ABC is right angled at B...... So its formula is---------> (AC)^2= (AB)^2+(BC)^2.............. Or (Hypotenuse)^2 = sum of square of other two sides( base and altitude).
