transformer is a device which converts high voltage into low voltage or low voltage into high voltage Transformer which converts high voltage into low voltage is called Step Up transformer Transformer with Converse low voltage to High Voltage is called step down transformer

The ratio of transformers primary and secondary windings with respect to each other produces a either voltage transformer or a set down voltage transformer with the ratio between the no. of primary turns to the no. of secondary turns being called the turns ratio or your transformer ratio.
