Hey!

______________

Carbon forms a large number of compounds in nature and that is why it is versatile in nature.

Reasons for the versatility of carbon?

• Catenation : The unique property of self linking of the carbon atoms through the covalent bonds in order to form long straight or branched chains and rings of different sizes is known as Catenation.

Reasons for Catenation :

- Small size of carbon atom.
- Unique electronic configuration of carbon.
- The carbon carbon ( C-C ) bonds are strong.

• Tetravalency of carbon : Carbon atoms form
four covalent bonds with the other atoms and it's valency is four.
This characteristic of carbon atom of forming four covalent bonds is called Tetravalency of carbon.

• Formation of multiple bond : Carbon forms double or triple bond with other elements.
