Decomposition reaction is the type of reaction in which the reactant give simpler products.
In Decomposition reaction a compound breaks down to give two or more simpler substances. In this reaction there is only one reactant. Decomposition reaction is the opposite of a combination reaction.
E.g : 1.Mercury (II) oxide on heating decomposes to give Mercury and oxygen.
2HgO (s) → 2Hg(l) + O2(g)
2.Copper (II) oxide on heating decomposes to give copper and oxygen.
2CuO (s) → Cu(s) + O2(g)
Decomposition reactions are of following types : •Thermal decomposition reactions•Electrolytic decomposition reactions•Photochemical decomposition reactions
