Answer:The concentration of extracellular dopamine in the brain is something that is very difficult to quantify, most papers that do so have done it in the brains of rodents (Gonon 1993 or Garris 1994) where the basal level of extracellular dopamine is often cited to be around 10 - 30 nM, although many of these studies are investigating DA flux in response to different drugs and simply report a percent increase above baseline rather than an actual number. You could try looking into papers using cyclic voltammetry or micro dialysis to examine responses to cocaine or methmaphetamine. In Scheller et. al., 2010, they measure dopamine in the CSF of HIV infected and control patients and show it to be around 15 pg/mL in uninfected individuals. Margaret Rices papers are a good place to look (try Cragg and Rice, 2004), you might also look at papers by David Sulzer.
