The layer of vegetation in a forest which is just below the canopy is called understory. The understory layer consists of smaller trees and tree saplings. The understory layer of forest has comparatively much less sunlight.

Examples of animals and plants found in understory layer of a forest -

Animals- sloths, jaguars, and small animals, such as frogs.

Plants -  Epiphytes include philodendrons, mosses, bromeliads, orchids and tropical cacti.
