the structural and functional unit of kidney is n-e-p-h-r-o-n

The n-e-p-h-r-o-n is the microscopic structural and functional unit of the kidney. It is composed of a renal corpuscle and a renal tubule. The renal corpuscle consists of a tuft of capillaries called a g-l-o-m-e-r-u-l-u-s and an encompassing Bowman's capsule. The renal tubule extends from the capsule.

Its chief function is to regulate water and soluble substances by filtering the blood, reabsorbing what is needed and excreting the rest as urine.

1,000,000 n-e-p-h-r-o-n-s in each human kidney.

There are two types of n-e-p-h-r-o-n-s:

Superficial cortical n-e-p-h-r-o-n-s, which have their g-l-o-m-e-r-u-l-i in the outer cortex. They have shorter loops of H-e-n-l-e, which dip only into the outer medulla.

J-u-x-t-a-m-e-d-u-l-l-a-r-y n-e-p-h-r-o-n-s, which have their g-l-o-m-e-r-u-l-i near the c-o-r-t-i-c-o-m-e-d-u-l-l-a-r-y border.

The n-e-p-h-r-o-n uses four mechanisms to convert blood into urine: filtration, r-e-a-b-s-o-r-p-t-i-o-n, secretion, and excretion of numerous substances.

The n-e-p-h-r-o-n-s of the kidneys process blood and create urine through a process of filtration, r-e-a-b-s-o-r-p-t-i-o-n, and secretion. Urine is about 95% water and 5% waste products. Nitrogenous wastes excreted in urine include urea, c-r-e-a-t-i-n-i-n-e, ammonia, and uric acid.
