Refractive index has no units because the refractive index is the ***ratio*** of the speed of light within the material of interest divided by the speed of light in a vacuum, thus the consistent units of measure (meters per second, or kilometers per second, etc.)

Refractive index of a medium is defined as the ratio of free space velocity of light(c) to the velocity of the light in that medium(v). So, refractive index(n)=c/v. As it is a ratio of same physical quantity(velocity),it has no unit.
