Those carbon compounds in which atleast one double or triple bond is present alongwith single bonds are called unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons are generally of two types:

1. Alkenes (double bond)

2. Alkynes (triple bond)

(Example is in the picture attached)

»Unsaturated hydrocarbons are the organic compounds of hydrogen and carbon having carbon - carbon double bond or carbon - carbon triple bond.

»They are known as alkenes (double bond) and alkynes (triple bond) .

»Their general formula reaction (alkenes) and CnH2n-2 (alkynes) .

»They show addition reaction in which unsaturated compound combines with another substance to give a single product carried out in the presence of catalyst.

\bf{For \:example}:-

C_2 H_4 + H_2 \xrightarrow {\rm Ni} C_2 H_6

This is also known as hydrogenation reaction which is used in making vegetable ghee from vegetable oil. In this reaction Carbon - Carbon double bond is removed by a carbon-carbon single bond.

»They are more reactive as compared to saturated hydrocarbons.
