What is the use of appendix in animal?

A lot of animals have organs in place of the appendix that serve a purpose. In herbivorous animals, like Koalas, the appendix is called the cecum, and is longer than in carnivores. The cecum is used to digest the cellulose in leaves and some other plant matter.
