  • Black soil is also called as Black Cotton soil as its color is black and it is good for cotton cultivation. Black soil is rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium but has poor nitrogen content. Crops like cotton, tobacco, chilly, oil seeds, jowar, ragi and maize grow well in it.
  • It has a swelling and shrinking characteristics on change of moisture. Thus it is not a good foundation soil. Under-reamed piles are used for construction of buildings in such type of soils.
  • Due to high clay content , Water holding capacity is more due to this the soils can be utilized for rainfed agriculture, particularly for growing minor millets and pulses like horse gram
  • Cultivation of cotton, sugarcane, ground-nut is done easily in this soil.
  • Clay particle and smectite impart swelling and shrinking prop. due to this cracks were developed and this forms an easy passage for rainwater.
  • High degree of fertility is there because of sufficient environment.
