The kink in the clinical thermometer is there to prevent the mercury column from falling down as soon as the thermometer is removed from the patients mouth(as the temperature changes). Thus providing accurate reading

Explanation:

When the thermometer is placed in the patients mouth the mercury expands and gains height giving the reading of temperature. But as soon as it is removed the mercury column falls. To prevent this a kink is there which breaks the mercury column as soon as the thermometer is removed from the patients mouth. This provides an accurate measurement.

Thus to again use the thermometer we need to give shake it which again resets the thermometer.
