For the following reason Magnet is used:
A motor works on the principle that when a rectangular coil is placed in magnetic field and current is passed through it a force acts on the coil which rotates it continuously.
In generator , when a straight wire is moved up and down rapidly between the two poles of a horse shoe magnet then electric current is produced.
