An optical bench is a common apparatus that is used in the physics labs. These benches consist of a long and a rigid member that has a linear scale which is applied to it. It also holds the light source holders, and the lenses and screens are also placed on the apparatus. The screens hold back the excess light from travelling any forward.

A few models of the optical benches have a
rotating arm and a goniometer that is used for holding the detectors that help in finding the radiations that are refracted by suitable prisms.

The main use of the optical benches is to observe the image formation. It is used to study the thermal radiation. They are also used to study
the rate of emission from different surfaces that are held at the same temperature.

In a photoelectric cell experiment, the
vapour lamp emits a monochromatic light that passes the optical bench through the filters of various wavelengths to strike a photo. The interference filters on the optical bench help in detecting the various wavelengths.
