The electronic signals containing data is converted into light pulses at the optical fiber cable. These light waves travel through the optical fibre using the phenomenon of total internal reflection of light . The light energy is transmitted with an efficiency of more than 95% for several kilometers. At the other end the optical pulses are converted back into electrical signals by photo diodes.
Optical fibers have a large bandwidth. Large number of signals can be sent simultaneously. The signals in them are not disturbed or interfered by other electrical or magnetic signals outside. The signals are transmitted at high speeds.
