what is the use of spines in plants like cactus??

yuvrajkj: they grow in desert
yuvrajkj: if they have leaves, they will dry out and burn
yuvrajkj: so they have spines instead of leaves
SKSM: spines are basically the modification of leaves. which prevents the cactus plant form water loss. In desert areas there is already shortage of water, so to conserve the water for various life process and metabolic activities water is required. spines are present to conserve the water
SKSM: they are the modification for Xerophytic conditions
