Split rings in a DC motor act as a commutator, they change the direction of current through the wire after every half rotation, to keep direction of current in the magnetic field constant, so that the motor rotates in a particular direction..............

Communator...... It is used to reverse the direction of current flowing through the coil.....every half rotation of the coil..
