The international date line functions as a "line of demarcation" separating two consecutive calendar dates. This adds up to a difference of 24 hours or one day between East and West of the 18 degree line of longitude. when you cross the date line, you become a Time Traveller of sorts.

The international date line is not straight line because to avoid any confusion of date, this line is drawn, this line is drawn through where the sea lies and not land. hence, the international date line is grown in zigzag manner

Answer:

It goes zig-zag. In order to avoid the confusion of having different dates in the same country, the International Date Line bends and goes zig zag at the Bering Strait between Siberia and Alaska, Fiji, Tonga and in some other islands.
