Kink, it is used to break the mercury in the glass tube and stores the reading of the thermometer by its contraction. It helps the user to measure its correct body temperature or we can call it as the correct reading in the thermometer.

Hope it helps you!!!

A clinical thermometer is made out of a long glass tube with a glass bulb at one end and a sealed other end.

Explanation:

  • Mercury is contained within the glass bulb.
  • A Celsius scale is written on the glass tube. There's also a kink (or constriction) in the glass tube just above the mercury bulb.
  • When the thermometer is removed from the patient's mouth, the kink prevents mercury from flowing back into the thermometer bulb.
  • The kink stops the mercury level from decreasing, allowing us to properly assess the patient's temperature.
