What is the utility of selecting a standard meridian in India?

The longitudinal and latitudinal extent of India is almost the same in degrees but in kilometers, the north & south distance is about 3200 kilometers when with that of the west west distance with 3000 kilometer.

To bring uniqueness in terms of local time, the standard meridian of about 82030’E has been formed.

It passes through UP so we need standard meridian for maintaining standard time.
