In multicellular organisms, cells are grouped to form tissues. These tissues are specialised to carry out a particular function at a definite place in the body. For example, the muscle cells form muscular tissues which helps in movement, nerve cells form nervous tissue which helps in transmission of messages.

  • A group of cells that carries out a specific function is called a tissue.

  • Different tissues carry out different functions. This is called the division of labour.

  • A tissue gives the highest possible efficiency of function in multi-cellular organisms.
