Copper forms two types of chlorides - cuprous chloride, Cu2Cl2, and cupric chloride, CuCl2.
In the Cu2Cl2, the metal and chlorine atoms are 1:1 ratio and in CuCl2 the atomic ratio is 1:2. Therefore, the valencies of copper are 1 and 2.
