The combining capacity of an atom is called its valency... & the electrons present in the outer most irbit is called valence electrons....

Atom ==>
an atom is the smallest unit of matter.

It is composed of three sub-atomic particles--»
1.electron
2.proton
3.neutron

Valency ==>
It is the combining power of an element.
It is the charge of over an ion.
It is possessed due to loss or addition of electron.

It is calculated by counting the no. of hydrogen ions added in it.

Or it is the number of electrons present in the outermost shell or (8- no. of electrons present in outermost shell)

NOTE==>
Valency is neither positive nor negative.
It only has magnitude.
