Valency of C----:

1.In CO 2 O have valency -2 and therefore C have +4.

O=C=O here each O shares 2 of its electron with C and thus both of them attain valence electronic configuration.

2. In CO O have valency -2 and thus C have valency +2.

CO here in CO ,C forms 2 covalent bonds and one dative bond with O.

Dative bond is bond which a electron pair is shared by an element and used by the other element only like here in case of CO an electron pair is provided by O to C and this pair is used only by C to attain noble gas electronic configuration.
