The outermost s and p orbitals in the 2nd energy level contain 4 electrons, and these are the valence electrons for a carbon atom. Therefore, a neutral carbon atom has 4 valence electrons.

Nasra1: four
subhodeepghosh22: Carbon has 6 electrons and 2 are in 1st shell and 4 are in 2nd shell ....so valency is 8-4 i.e 4
Nasra1: yaa
Nasra1: if youll not subtract from 8 then too it will be 4only
Nasra1: therefore subtract or not it doesnt matters
subhodeepghosh22: ya
