Copper is a transition metal which means it is not in any particular group.

As transition metal it possesses a property which is that it has variable valency.

This means that the metal can have different valencies in different scenarios.

So in copper sulphate or CuSO4, the valency of copper is +2 where as in Cu2O or copper oxide its valency is +1.
